Fly Fishing

Near Coleman, B.C. - This day I got 25 fish, 15 before 10 a.m.

There are few things that I love doing as much as fly fishing.  I am an experienced flie fisherman throughout the rivers of Southern Alberta and some places in Saskatchewan and British Columbia and have acted as a guide on occasion.

For me, catching fish is not as rewarding as the chase.  At times I spend hours merely walking up the river looking for the perfect hole.  Stopping on numerous occasions to watch the birds or beavers go about their daily lives.  On other occasions I spend more time analyzing the rocks searching for materials.  But once my fly is in the river, my concentration is full.

Despite being attacked by a bull snake, bees and chased by a Grizzly bear (only beating it to my truck by seconds) I love it.  In the future I hope to put my hand made flies to work on the local streams, but for now I will dedicate this site to my knapping and other Native American handcrafts.

Some Good Spots In Calgary:

  • Memorial Dr & Crowchild Tr: there's an island there that holds some good size Rb's, fish the tail end as well where it pools up, caught a 5 lb brown in there.

  • Under the bridge on Edmonton Tr and Memorial, some nice Rb's and huge whitefish

  • At the Zoo parking lot. There's a big holding spot for Browns at the south end of the lot, it get's fished a fair bit but if you're patient there's some huge browns in there.

  • Under the 17 Ave SE bridge, you'll have to wade out but you can get good steady action for Rb's and WF

  • The discharge at the water treatment plant, not a real pretty place to fish but the B's & Rb's do stack up in there due to the warmer water and weed growth.

  • Fish Creek Park, walk up stream from the boat ramp about 4 or 5 hundred yards and work the edges of the fast water, I have pulled many fish over 20" out of this spot. There's lot's of other places, in fact on the right day you can't go wrong just about anywhere on the mighty Bow. (having said that I hope you're C & R friendly)
