Tony
Stanfield currently lives in White City, Oregon, a small town a
hundred or so miles from the west coast. At 39 years of age, he has been
married for close to 20 years and has two kids; an 11 year old boy and a
little girl at the age of 6. Tony has been knapping for about five years
but before that he was a watercolor artist. One day at a western art
show, Tony caught the tale end of a flintknapping demonstration and knew
right away that he had found his medium. After watching a video, reading
all he could and talking with a few other knappers, and about three years
of practice, he started selling things locally. After awhile, Tony sought
out new markets and bought a computer. He later remarked, " Figuring
my computer out was harder than learning to knapp. I am almost as proud of
my website that I designed and maintain as I am of my knapping skills. I
have always approached flintknapping as an art form but I realize that my
customers might be more interested in the authentic look. So one of my
knives might look authentic while the next might be a fantasy knife
looking like nothing from the past. One thing about my knapping is I am
constantly learning and getting better. I think most knappers probably
would agree."
