So I got home from work and went out to check my birds. As I pulled into the yard and got out of the truck I made a turkey call and sure enough they called back and came running to greet me. We have many chickens and free range turkeys that have quickly become pets due to their friendly personalities. I repeated this routine many days then my favourite turkey went missing. Two days later another, which I found 100 yards from their safe coup. That Sunday I got sick and went back to bed until noon. As I drank orange juice and looked out the window I noticed a blood trail on the snow. I dragged my weak body out and found that something grabbed a turkey near the coup and dragged it alive to within 50 feet from our house and killed it. It then was dragged another 100 yards into the field where it was eaten. We got coyote problems I thought. Two days later my wife called me at work at 2 pm in a panic that the dog was fighting three coyotes in the yard 30 feet from the house and right beside the kids play house. I told her to call the dog inside and dismissed it as coyotes are not like that. One night later the dog started barking at the window so I ran out with him and saw the coyote and ran up to it. But this coyote did not move! As I shined my spot light out over the field I saw at-least 8 coyotes spread out in waiting mode. I then ran at the main one and too my horror it did not move and had no fear of me. I slowly walked back inside thinking that was the biggest coyote I ever saw. We lost another bird that night. The next day two coyotes came back. This time I ran out with a gun, but had no bullets. I got close to it but it had no fear so I started yelling at it. When it stood up it was three times bigger than its' coyote companion and I instantly realized that it was a wolf. It just slowly looked at me and walked away. He was back the next day and the wife called me at work to let me know that the young kids were outside at the time. I grabbed my grampa's old 22 that had been sitting for years and tried to get bullets for it but I had to have it registered, take courses and pay a lot of money and it would take a month or more! So I called the government and explained my situation but they told me "too bad" and could not send someone out! I had two choices now so I got rid of the birds I loved and thankfully he left after they did. A year later I told this story to a local and he said "Yah that is old grey. He is a wolf that runs with coyotes here and I have tried to shoot him on a couple of occasions but he seems to know the range of my gun". There is nothing more scary than running out into the dark and being face to face with a killer, except for a government that will not allow you to defend yourself.
